Also La Quinta on 33rd, right behind the Empire State Building. the rooms are a bit on the small side, but the rooftop bar/patio has the most amazing view of the Empire State building - it's practically on top of you. Amazing. Also good: Holiday Inn Express(all over Manhattan). You might want to look at B&B's in Brooklyn Heights. Lovely old Brooklyn brownstones that have reasonable prices and breakfast included. Close to the subway and a 15 minute ride to Manhattan.
